Varations of Poker

The game of poker has a number of variations – all which follow similar rules and same hierarchy of hand ranking. There are three large groups of variants – made by the method of card dealing and the order of betting in the game of poker. For all versions of poker that stem from “Straight”, a full hand is dealt to every player and each player is to bet in one round (raising and re-raising if they wish to). This was how the original version of poker as played. What is referred to as poker today emerged from a game called Primero that became the game called three-card brag – something that was very popular with gentlemen in the time of the American Revolutionary War. Till date this game is still played in UK. In Straight, during the final show down, sometimes hands of five cards are also used but poker is a lot more complex than that.

Stud Poker –

The cards are dealt in face down and face up rounds from a prearranged combination or streets followed by a round of betting. As poker evolved from three to five card hands, this happened to become the next oldest family. The cards were dealt one at a time, either face up or face down. Between each round there is a betting round. Seven-card stud is the most popular stud variant in modern times – it deals two more cards to each player, four facing up and three facing down. Of this spread, one has to make the best possible 5-card hand.
